IAH revision session - immunoglobulin (antibodies) Flashcards
Key difference between Ig classes?
Different heavy chains
Where is IgG concentrated?
Serum
Which Ig is the first to be produced?
IgM
Which Ig is pentameric?
IgM
What Ig takes over after the initial infection?
IgG
What are the 2 forms of IgA?
Monomeric - in the blood
Dimeric = mucosal (secretory) = the major one
How does IgE bind to mast cells?
Fc receptor
What is the function of IgE?
Degranulate mast cells (during hypersensitivity)
What is hypersensitivity a consequence of?
Advanced immune system against parasites (mast cells degranulate)
What is the consequence of degranulated mast cells?
Activation of innate immunity - increased blood flow, neutrophil migration (inflammation)
Histamine release
What T cells is involved in B cell activation?
TFH
Where are B cells activated?
Germinal centre of lymph nodes
What is clonal selection?
Proliferation and differentiation of the specific B cell
What is the difference between B cells and plasma cells?
B cells can differentiate into plasma cells so they secrete all the IG (don’t have any not the surface)
Function of isotope switching?
Make sure the response is appropriate
Improve immune response after encounter
