Hypaxial Muscles Flashcards
Epaxial Muscles
dorsal to the transverse processes of the vertebrae, EXTENSORS of vertebral column
Axial Muscles
Hypaxial and Epaxial Groups
Hypaxial Muscles
ventral to the transverse processes, and are FLEXORS of vertebral column
Superficial fascia of trunk
covers the thorax and abdomen
Deep Fascia of the trunk
attachs to ends of spinous and transverse processes of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae to the lateral thoracic/abdominal walls. Forms the linea alba
Longus Capitis
covers lateral surface of cervical vertebrae, lateral to longus colli. Comes from transverse processes of cervical vertebrae and inserts on basioccipital bone of skull.
Longus colli
covers the ventral surfaces of vertebral bodies from 6T vertebra to the atlas
Scalenus
ventral to origin of serratus ventralis, and attaches to first few ribs and cervical vertebrae
Serratus Ventralis
2- cervicis/thoracis
Also hypaxial muscle
Serratus dorsalis
A: Cranial: lifts ribs for inspiration, Ca: draws last 3 ribs caudal-expir.
Cr: dorsal surface of cranial thorax, inserts on craniolateral surfaces of ribs
Ca: smaller, on dorsal surface of caudal thorax, and inserts on caudal borders of last three ribs
External Intercostal Muscles
Between ribs, fibers run caudoventrally. Fxn: draw ribs together for respiration
Internal Intercostal Muscles
Fibers run cranioventrally, and are medial to external intercostal muscles. Also draw the ribs together for respiration
External Abdominal Oblique
covers ventral half of lateral thoracic wall, and lateral part of abdominal wall. Comes from last ribs, and thoracolumbar fascia. Fibers run caudoventrally. Linea Alba, and Superficial Inguinal Ring. Hypaxial Muscle!
Internal abdominal oblique
thoracolumbar fascia to last rib and inserts on rectus abdominis and linea alba.
Transversus abdominis
medial to internal abs/rectus ab. The fibers run transversely. Comes from last 4/5 ribs and lumbar vertebrae and inserts on linea alba
