Sagittal Plane
Passes through the head, body or limb
Median Plane
Divides the head, body, or limb longitudinally into equal right and left halves.
Dorsal Plane
Runs at right angles to the median and transverse planes and thus divides the body or head into dorsal and ventral portions
Transverse Plane
Cuts across the head, body or limb at right angles to its long axis or across the long axis of an organ or a part-
Will make a right angle with the dorsal plane (+)
Dorsal
DORSAL FIN! Relative to the back, corresponds with the surface of the head, neck, tail.
When talking about the limbs it applies to the upper part of the front surface of the carpus, tarsus, metapodium, and digits
Ventral
BELLY VENTS FARTS! Near the belly!! Talking about the area near the belly. The side of the neck, thorax, and tail.
Not used for describing limbs.
Medial
Near the medial plane —-> | <—–
Lateral
away from medial plane.
Cranial
Near the head
Rostral
towards the nose- only applies to the head
Caudal
towards the tail!!
superficial
near the surface of the body or surface of a solid organ
deep
near the center of the body or the center of a solid organ
proximal
near the main mass or origin.
–>in the limbs and tail; the attached end
distal
away from the main mass or origin.
–>in the limbs and tail; the free end.
