human body - unit 1 Flashcards
1) chemicals
2) cells
3) tissues
4) organs
5) organ systems
hierarchy of structural organization of the body
a series of changes that move conditions away from the normal state (homeostasis)
positive feedback mechanisms
consists of the skin, mucous membranes, hair, and nail. Regulates Body temp. Protective barrier and produces vitamin d.
integumentary system
protects and supports body organs. stores minerals. is the body’s structural framework. (bones + joints)
skeletal system
enables movement of the body and is attached to bones/skin. generates heat. (skeletal muscles)
muscular system
network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. (brain + spinal cord + nerves)
nervous system
transport system of the body. carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and wastes. (heart + blood vessels)
cardiovascular system
glands that control several body activities by secreting hormones. (thyroid + ovaries/testes + etc.)
endocrine system
keeps blood supplied with oxygen and removes co2. houses structures for speech (lungs + trachea + larynx/pharynx + nose)
respiratory system
breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates wastes. (mouth + pharynx + stomach + intestines + liver + etc)
digestive system
removes excess water from blood and exits as urine (kidneys + ureters + urinary bladder + urethra)
urinary system
defense against infection and disease. (lymphatic vessels + spleen + thymns)
lymphatic system
produces offspring
reproductive system
testes, prostate gland, scrotum, penis, and duct system. produces sperm.
reproductive system (male)
produces eggs and nourishes and shelters the unborn baby. ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, vulva
reproductive system (female)
