What is life stress?
Normal tension that occurs as result of both external demands and internal experiences
What does adaptation refer to?
When the environment and individual change in response to the interaction with each other
What is coping?
Individual use of one’s strengths and problem-solving abilities to navigate life stress and develop self-esteem and hope
What is human relatedness?
Ability to cultivate relationships
What can be a source of stress to individuals/larger systems when misused by certain groups
Power
The problem child role
child with problematic behavior, which may serve as a distraction from other problems that the family, particularly the parents, do not want to face
Scapegoat role
The family member to whom others unjustly attribute problems, often viewed as “bad”, while other family members are viewed as “good”
Peacekeeper
A family member who serves to mediate relationships and reduce family stress
What are dysfunctional interpersonal relationships?
Refers to interactions characterized by an extreme power imbalance and dominance by one or more involved members, often leading to submissiveness, learned helplessness, and feelings of low self-esteem in the less powerful members
Psychological neglect
Involves withholding love, affection, and emotional security that a child needs in order to grow and thrive
Psychological abuse
Involves emotional manipulation that uses strategies of shame, fear, and guilt to control someone’s behavior

What is the ABCX Model?
A (event occurs) + B (family’s resources) + (family’s perception)= X (whether event is viewed as a crisis)
Common responses to trauma
Foreshortened future- sense that one’s life is shortened or forever altered and that a normal life may never be experienced again
Emotional responses
Physical reactions- poor sleep, muscle pain, gastrointestinal complaints, neurological problems
