tonic clonic seizures
may have cyanosis
tongue biting
urinary incontinence
what is the management upon onset of grand mal seizures ?
call for help turn woman on her side give oxygen and protect airways urinary catheter blood tests regularly
what is the medical management of eclampsia related seizures ?
magnesium sulphate should be administered loading dose 4-6 mgs (1-2 mg hour infusion )
IV saline
if magnesium sulphate is unavailable which medication should be given ?
diazepam
what is the significance of fetal bradycardia in relation to CS ?
fetal bradycardia is a frequent finding
best to avoid urgent CS for the bradycardia until mother is stable
diuretics in eclampsia ?
contraindicated the patient is already hypovolemic
what drugs can be taken to lower BP inn eclampsia ?
labetalol
hydralazine
methyldopa
nifedipine
what are the signs of magnesium toxicity ?
loss of reflexes
respiratory depression
paralysis
cardiac arrest
what is the antidote for magnesium toxicity ?
calcium gluconate
