MAIT will conduct investigations ONLY within CHP jurisdictions EXCEPT following situations:
- Fatal / severe injury to on-duty CHP officer, CalTrans worker or CalTrans contractor
- Aircraft incident - and when requested by CHP Air Ops
- Unusually significant incident - must be approved by MAIT division commander
A minimum MAIT team is made up of:
- MAIT Coordinator
- MAIT Leader (Sergeant)
- Two investigators
- a Motor Carrier Specialist (MCS 1)
- an Engineer from CalTrans

- Commercial vehicle involved fatal
- Crash with significant amount of HazMat
- Crash with possible roadway defect as factor
- Crash with vehicle with possible manufacturing defect
- Crash with need for in-depth speed analysis
- Fatal/serious injury crash with possible seatbelt failure
MAIT team should NOT be called to a crash scene just to prepare a ____________ only
