- surrounded by forests and swamps
- mines planted around the camp

- at least 17,000 Jews were murdered
- almost all the people sent to Sobibòr were killed immediately
- small no. (approx. 700) selected to work disposing bodies or sorting property stolen from victims
- 14th October 1943
- prisoners rebelled
- killed 20 SS men and Ukrainian guards
- approx. 300 prisoners able to escape but most caught and killed soon after
- 50-70 survived at end of war
