Hormones Flashcards
Hormones
Chemicals secreted by a cell group that travel through blood stream to act on target tissues
Endocrine Glands
Release hormones within the body
Exocrine Glands
Use ducts to secrete fluid outside of the body like tears and sweat
Hypothalamus
Controls hormone systems and regulates release of tropic hormones through releasing hormones
Pineal gland
Responsible for reproductive maturation and body rhythms
Classes of Hormones
Peptides
Amine hormones
Steroid hormones
Peptide hormones
Short string of amino acids that bind to specific receptors on surface of cell and actives secondary messengers inside the cell
Amine Hormones
Modified version of single amino acids also called monoamine hormones bind to receptors on surface of cell that activate secondary messengers inside of cell
Steroid Hormones
Derived from cholesterol made of 4 carbon rings that cross cell membrane and bind to receptors inside of cells to control DNA expression
Posterior Pituitary Gland
Releases oxytocin and arginine vasopressin directly into capillaries
Vasopressin
Promotes water conservation and increases blood pressure
Oxytocin
Responsible for reproductive and parenting behavior, uterine contractions and milk down reflex
Anterior Pituitary Gland
Synthesizes tropic hormones
Tropic hormones
Affect secretions of other glands and only targets glands that have appropriate receptors for tropic hormones
Negative feedback
Output feeds back to inhibit signals from further secretion
