Homeostasis: Diabetes Flashcards
Type 1 Diabetes
genetic, born with it
Type 2 Diabetes
gained later in life, pancreas stops producing insulin
Blood Glucose
blood sugar
Hypoglycemia
low blood sugar levels, makes you pass out
Hyperglycemia
too much blood sugar, hindered insulin production
How does the human body keep blood sugar levels around 70 to 110 mg/dL?
the human body releases insullin/glucagon to keep the blood sugars leavels normal
Insulin
released when blood sugar gets too high, abosrbs glucose out of blood
Glucagon
liver releases glucose stored in the cells
Describe severe hypoglycemia
those affected may pass out, have a seizure, fall into a coma, or die.
Where and why is insulin made?
insulin is made in the pancrease. made so that glucose levels can be brought down
What happens if insulin is not present or not working properly?
blood sugar level will get high, could get diabetes.
What is glucose?
broken down food that is taken to the liver and stored as glycogen
What happens to blood sugar when a person eats?
it rises
What organs does glucose travel through?
stored in glycogen in liver, taken through small intesting and absorbed into the vlood by the intestinal wall.
How is glycose chemically digested and physically digested?
chemically by liver
physically by intestines
