Homeostasis Flashcards
What is cytology?
study of cells
What is histology?
study of tissues
What are your 5 survival needs?
nutrition oxygen water maintenance of body temperature maintenance of pressure
What is homeostasis?
the ability to maintain a reality stable internal environemtn despite fluctuations in the external environment
What happens if blood sodium starts to vary?
The nervous system will stop working
Give 4 examples of homeostasis
blood sugar control
body tempaerature control
blood pressure control
pH of blood and other tissues control
What does hypothalamus do?
controls the regualtion of homeostasis
What is negitive feedback?
When the output of the system shuts off the orginal stimulus
When something that is regulated goes too high, negitive feedback works to bring it back down e.g. temperature
What happens when the body temperature goes too low?
The stimulus detects the drop in temperature. The receptors sends signal to the control centre. The brain detects this and signal effector organs. The skin blood vessels construct and sweat glands remain inactive. The body heat is converted, temperature slowly returns to normal
What 2 things should happen for the body to cool down?
Perspiration
Loose clothing
What 4 things should happen for the body to heat up?
Shivering
Increase later of clothing
Piloerection
Blood moves to the centre of the body
What happens when blood sugar goes too high?
Detected by the pancreas, this then encouraged the production of insulin. Sugar enters the cells, the glucose is converted to glycogen in the liver and muscles
What is positive feedback?
Homeostasis is not regulated
The change proceeds in the same direction as the stimulus
What is thermoregulation?
Process which allows the body to maintain its core internal temperature
