Gastro-intestinal System Flashcards
What does GIT stand for? What is it?
Gastro intestinal tract
A series of tubes going from the mouth to the anus
What are the 5 functions of the gastro-intestinal system?
Ingestion Motility Secretion Digestion Elimination
What are the two types of digestion? Explain
Mechanical digestion >breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small water soluble molecules
Chemical digestion > good being broken down by digestive enzymes which turn the food into smaller nutrients to be easily absorbed by the body
What are the two types of saliva?
Serous and mucous
What happens in the GIT?
Here the ingested food is broken into small components that can be absorbed through the different organs.
What happens in accessory digestive organs?
Assistance in breaking down food
What happens at the pharynx?
Swallowing occurs
What happens at the oesophagus?
Pipe where the bolus is delivered to the stomach
What happens in the stomach?
bolus is mixed with gastric secretions as smooth muscle contracts. The mixing continues as a acidic puree called chyme is formed.
What happens in the small intestine?
Receive chyme from the stomach that is further mixed with accessory organ secretions. Here most of the chemical digestion and absorption occurs.
What are the 3 reigons of the small intestine?
Duodenum (digestion), jejunum (absorption) and ileum (spare capacity)
What happens in the large intestine?
Continues absorption, mainly of water, electrolytes and vitamins
What are the 3 sections of the large intestine?
Cecum, Colon, Rectum
What is the function of the liver?
produce and release bile into the duodenum.
What is the function of the gallbladder?
stores, concentrates and releases bile into the duodenum
