Cell Divison & Protein Synthesis Flashcards
What is the nucleus? What is it made up of?
Control centre of the cell
Made up of chromatin made up of DNA and protein
What are the four nucleotide bases in DNA?
Andeine
Thymine
Cytosine
Guanine
What is protein synthesis?
Cells building specific protein
What is transcription in protein synthesis?
Information copied from DNA to mRNA in nucleus
The conversion of DNA to RNA happens to allow the molecule to leave the nucleus
The RNA molecule is sent to the cytoplasm
What is translation of protein synthesis?
Information from mRNA is decoded, once it binds to a specific site on the ribosome, it is used to create proteins at ribosomes in cytoplasm.
The ribosomes contain a binding site for mRNA and two binding sites for tRNA.
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid
What is RNA?
Ribonucleic acid
What is mRNA?
Messenger RNA – RNA copy of the protein genetic information within the DNA molecule in the nucleus
What are genes?
Components of genetic material which control characters
Where are genes located?
Over chromosomes
What is DNA?
Inherited matieral
Where is DNA found?
Found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells which determine the composition of the organism
What are inherited traits? Give some examples
Genes which influence which traits the characterises the child will have
Blood sugar, writing hand, sleeping style, mutation, hair type and colour, eye colour and height
