Biology of Cells Flashcards
What does reproduction mean?
Production of new organisms and cells
What are the 3 parts of cells?
Cytoplasm and organelles
Cytoplasmic membrane
Nucleus
What does embedded cholestrol molecules do?
Makes the membrane stronger.
What does the cell membrane do?
Regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cells, also it helps cells to attach to other cells
What is the function of ribosomes?
When the ER is rough, protein synthesis and processing
Without them, the ER would be smooth, where the function would be involved in lipid synthesis, absorption of fats and metabolism of drugs
What is the mitochondria?
it is the powerhouse of the cell
What are lyosomes? What is their function?
They are ‘rubbish disposal units’
They have digestive enzymes which break up the old cell components, bacteria , nutrient molecules and cholsestrol
What are peroxisomes?
They contain enzymes which work to break down lipid
What does the plasma membrane?
site wheremovement of substances around the body is controlled
What is the purpose of membrane proteins?
To move molecules across the cell membrane
What is ATP?
Transports chemical energy within cells for metabolsim
What is exocytosis?
Movement of materials out of the cell
Why does mitosis occur? And where does it normally occur?
Occurs in response to the body’s need for growth and repair
Exclusively in the eurkaryotic cells
What are chomatids?
The end of the chromosomes
What is meiosis? Why does it occur?
cell division which reduces the number of chromosomes in the parent cell by half and produces four gamete cells
To produce egg and sperm for sexual reproduction
