Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What do blood vessels do?
Carry blood
What is blood flow veocity?
Rate of blood transported per unit of time
What do valves in your blood do?
Open and close so that the blood flows in one direction, without them the blood would flow in reverse
What is venous return?
Flow of blood from the systemic circulation of the heart. It has a low pressure. If it fails, cardiac output will stop
What is aorta artery?
most important artery in the body which pumps the oxygenated blood from the heart to the veins
What hypotension? What will happen?
Low blood pressure, you will faint
What is hypertension? What is the long term damage?
High blood pressure, will cause damage to your bodily organs
How can you calaculate blood pressure?
cardiac output times total peripheral resistance
What is systolic pressure?
pressure in the heart during a contraction
What is diastolic pressure?
pressure in the heart between a contraction
What is the cardiovascular system made up of?
the heart and blood vessels
What is hemoglobin?
red-pigmented protein that transport oxygen and carbon dioxide
What are the 4 blood types?
Type A
Type B
Type AB
Type O
What are the two circuits of the heart? What is their function?
Pulmonary Circulation - movement of the deoxygenated blood through the right side of the heart
Systemic Circulation - movement of the oxygenated blood through the left side of the heart
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
To transport blood through the body to allow exchange of substances between the capillaries and the body’s cells
