Homeostasis Flashcards
what things need to be kept at the controlled level to keep your cells working properly
Ion content
Water content
Sugar content
Temperature
Where is the ion content regulated from
The kidneys
Ions such as sodium are taken into the body through food, then are absorbed in the blood
What will happen if the body takes in to much of an ion
It will need t be removed by the kidney from the blood in urine or you will sweat it out
What 3 ways is water removed from the body
Through the skin as sweat
Via the lungs as breath
Via the kidneys as urine
How can you differentiate how your body balances between sweat or urine to lose water? And what is the reason for this?
It depends on what your doing or what the weather is like
On a cold day or when your not exercising, you don’t sweat as much so you’ll produce more urine which will be pale as waste carried in urine will be more diluted
On a hot day or when your exercising you sweat a lot and so you’ll produce less urine but it will be more concentrated(deeper colour). You will lose more water through your breath because you breath faster
What is body temperature controlled by
The brain
All enzymes work best at a certain temperature. The enzymes within a human body work best at 37 degrees so this is the temperature your body tries to maintain. A part of the brain acts as its own thermostat. It’s sensitive to the blood temperature wait revives messages from the skin that provide info about the skin temperature
Blood sugar also needs to be
Controlled
What does eating foods containing carbohydrates puts ……. Into the……..from the……..
Glucose
Blood
Gut
What does the normal metabolism of cells do
Removes glucose from the blood. But if you do more intense exercise then much more glucose is removed
What hormone helps control the right amount of glucose in the blood
Insulin. It controls it so your cells get a constant supply of energy.
