Fighting Diseases - Vaccination Flashcards
Vaccination protects from
Future infections
Vaccinations involve injecting….
Small amounts of dead or inactive microorganisms
The dead or inactive microorganisms carry…
Antigens, which your body uses antibodies to attack them
If live microorganisms of the same type appear after the vaccination , the microorganism…
The White blood cell can rapidly mass produce antibodies to kill off he pathogen
What happens to some vaccinations over time? And what will be done about it
They wear off, so booster injections may need to be given to increase the levels of antibodies again
2 pro’s of vaccinations
1- vaccines have helped control lots of infectious diseases that were once common
2- big outbreaks of diseases called epidemics can be prevented if a large number of the population is vaccinated
2 cons of vaccination
1- vaccines don’t always work as some times they don’t give you immunity
2- you can sometimes have a bad reaction to a vaccine, however this is rare (e.g swelling or maybe seizures)
