Overview of the roaring 20
A
- post economic recession, there was a point of economic boom
- unemployment was low, earnings for individuals and companies high
- greater disposable income meant a consumer society
- > became known as the roaring twenties

- by 1923-24 economic slump was over
- world economy had improved and countries were buying Canadian goods
- demand for Canadian wheat reached record levels in 1920
- domestic and industrial demand for iron ore, nickel and zinc caused a mining boom

Canadian pulp and paper industry expanded rapidly during 1920
- demand was huge in American market
- Canada exported more pulpwood and news print than the rest of the world combined

- grew from a small industry to become forth largest manufacturing industry in Canada
- production of new household products increased. I.e labour saving electrical devices

Tax on foreign goods
- federal government introduced tariffs to protect Canada manufacturing and industrial base
- > us made farm machinery was taxed so that it was more expensive than Canadian made farm machinery

- people moved into cities to work in factories or in service industries like transportation, fiancee, public administration and hospitality

- astounding range of household goods made available by department store like eatons

- automatic washing machines, electric irons, toaster stoves, vacuum cleaners and sewing machines
- > gave people more free time

- radio was a way for families to spend time w/ each other
- family would huddle around the radio set and listen to their shows of music, comedy, soap opera, education, news, and preaching
