What is militarism

A

Belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability to use it aggressive, defend and promote, national interest. Ex. North Korea, USA, Russia
- thought war was inevitable, therefore having a strong military was important
- lead to arms race, nation out do each other to create bigger/stronger weapons
Ex. Germany and UK (British) for dreadnoughts

A

European countries - began building up armies
Germany- worried, between France and Russia
Standing armies, nation introduced conscription, large number of trained reserves
- men 18-40 forced to serve

A

Great European were competing for colonies or territory
Britain = largest
Other nations = jealous/ envy
Germany wanted an empire as big as Britain (Kaiser Wilhelm)
-> smaller nations like Italy and Belgium wanted a piece of the action

  • European countries, France, Britain, Germany thought they were better then everyone else
    • > each wanted to dominate
  • many people, Slavs in the Balkans wanted freedom

    Triple alliance - Germany, Austria- Hungary, Italy
    Triple Entente - France, Russia, Britain w/ its colonies
    Alliances intend deter from starting a fight, but made more likely a war to start

  • June 28 1914 - arch duke of Austria was Franz Ferndinand was killed in Sarajevo in the province basnia by black hand (Serbian nationalist group)
    Killer - Gravilo Princid
    Black hand killed because they didn’t like Austria Hungary control of the area
  • Austria Hungary blamed Serbia for assassination and threatened to attack
