The history of the Spanish flu

A

WW1 did not cause the flu, the living conditions and movements increased by spread and lethality

  • Soldiers were very susceptible to infection/ sickness
  • The strain targeted 20-40 ages of or people who were already sick
  • The virus originated from Asia to Europe (spread globally)

Origin of the name

A

First cases of the flu noticed in France, Belgium and America.

  • Named Spanish flu because of its intensive news coverage in Spain
  • The virus made it across the globe quickly and in big groups brought by troops

Terrified Canada

A

Canadian streets were eerie and people always wore masks

  • Some areas it was a criminal offence to shake hands, gatherings of more then 10 people
  • Schools theatres and public buildings were closed
  • The 1919 Stanley cup was cancelled
    • > Joe Hall, a player died of this sickness

Mortality

A

The exact number of victims is unknown, but estimated 60-100 million people died world wide

  • Canada, 50 000 died while in small communities were wiped out
  • The flu is seen as “the greatest medical holocaust” ever
  • The Spanish flu made the end of ww1, bitter sweet
