Returning soldiers
A
- took months to get home - caused resentment and anger
- many vets returned with physical and emotional issues - could not work had difficulties readjusting
- felt left down by the government - disillusionment was common

Recession - the demand for food and material dropped; almost overnight - Canada economy slowed down, losing many jobs
- returning vets could not find work
- women pushed out of wartime jobs and women rights and freedom took a step backwards

Hit the world towards the end of the war
- up to 100 million people died world wide
- almost as many Canadians died as had perished in the war

Winnipeg general strike
A
- many vets returned home w/ Sense of power entitlement; wanted better wages and working conditions from their employers
- upset by the amount of money some people (war profiters) had made selling war material to the government
- vets began establishing labour unisons all over the country

What happened when labour unions started forming
A
- wealthy Canadian got scared and feared communist regulation, like Russia, 1917 the red scare
- Winnipeg over 35 000 people went on strike bringing halt to the city for almost two months
- fearing the beginning of the revolution, government stepped in using soldiers, police and thugs to intimidate, beat, shoot and kill protesters, - BLOODY SATURDAY
- strike was eventually crushed

Economic boom
A
- by 1923 - 1924, the economic slump follow ww1 was over
- began to enjoy economic boom
- people moved to the city to work in factories or in service industries (industries like banking, retail, hospitality)
- wages were rising, buying on credit was possible
- workers had more money to spend on product
- > all these development created confidence in economy than many people bought stocks
- therefore stock market boomed
- decade eventually called the roaring twenties had began
