Roles of the nobles (2)
Nobles helped to establish a system of military officers and civil servants
Nobility filled the roles of officials (because there wasn’t enough) running regions and local areas on behalf of the tsar.
How did wealth vary amongst nobility
Some nobles lived in relative poverty.
The number of serfs a noble owned acted as an indicator for their wealth
What special treatment did nobles gain
Nobility were exempt from the payment of any direct monetary taxes
Tsars gave nobles land and in return nobles provided services for thew Tsar (most usually officers in the armed force/ public officials)
How much of Russia’s population did peasants make up
Over 90% of the Russian population were peasants
How were peasants split up
Around half were serfs, half were state peasants
Role of serfs
Ensured that the nobility had labour and income, they were required to provide labour
