Chemistry - organic chemistry Flashcards
How can alcohol be produced by sugar
Sugar is fermented with yeast at a temperature between 5-45 degrees celsius
How can alcohols be produced through ethene
The reaction of ethene and steam with a catalyst
State one use of propanol
Fuel
Solvent
Describe the process of producing a carboxylic acid from an alcohol
Alcohol is oxidised using an oxidising agent.
Explain why alkenes form polymers but alkanes don’t
Alkanes do not have a carbon-carbon double bond (they are saturated)
So alkenes are able to bond to other molecules
Definition of polymers
Small molecules join together to form a polymer / many monomers join togther to form a polymer
Definition of biodegradable
Polymer breaks down (decomposes/decays) by bacteria
Why are addition polymers not biodegradable
They are inert/ unreactive
Differences between addition polymerisation and condensation polymerisation
In addition polymers monomers k=join together to form one large polymer and in condensation polymers one large molecule and a smaller molecule are formed
