Belief in Allah and Muhammad as his prophet.
Standard prayer five times a day and and public prayer at noon on Fridays.
Observance of the holy month Ramadan, requiring fasting from dawn/dusk each day.
At least one pilgrimage to Mecca if possible.
Giving money and support to the unfortunate.
Define jihad. How has the meaning changed over time? (page 196)
Sometimes “striving in the way of the Lord”, “holy war”.
What accounts for the rapid expansion of the Arabs after the rise of Islam in the early seventh century? (page 195-196)
Various explanations, from long drought to a camel cavalry to plagues upon enemies to conspiracy between leaders. Convinced that they would go to heaven if killed in battle, the warriors also fought with vigor.
What were the Crusades? Why are they so important in understanding Middle Eastern history? (pages 200-201)
The Crusades were a war/collection of them that involved Christians invading and attacking Muslims because of supposed infractions on the religion of the former. They are important in understanding Middle Eastern history because of the territories changing hands back and forth and all the historical changes that any conflict brings.
What impact did geography have on the early African cultures/civilizations? (pages 220-224)
The variety from deserts to jungles caused African civilizations to be very different from one another.
What were some of the migration patterns in Africa? Why were people moving about? (all of the chapter, but special notice on page 221 & 223)
The Sahara was turning into a desert, so everyone had to leave. People from the Sahara migrated towards the coasts, where food and water were far easier to come by.
Islam is one of the defining characteristics in most parts of Africa. What was African religion like before Islam? After? (pages 225 on)
Before - Christianity.
After- women’s status decreased.
Compare & contrast the central & southern African societies. (pages 234-235)
Central was more stationary and with larger groups of people working together. Shared many customs like family units, family organization, and musical elements.
Discuss the urban and village life in Africa. (pages 235-236)
Urban had more than one family in a place at a time and allowed for more division of labor, allowing people to do stuff like trade, do metal and woodwork. Village had one family group and up to 25-30 people.
What roles did women have before Islam? After? (pages 236-237)
Similar to males, not matriarchal, but patriarchal through women. Women were of more similar status and polygamy seemed to be common, not only with a male having multiple female partners, but also vice-versa. Became more isolated from outsiders after Islam and assumed more Islamic roles.
