Histology Flashcards
what do the ovaries produce?
gamates
steroids (O + P)
what does the medulla of the ovary contain?
connective tissue
contorted arteries
veins
lymphatics
what does the cortex of the ovary contain?
scattered ovarian follicles in highly cellular connective tissue stroma
what is the outer shell of the cortex?
dense connective tissue layer called the tunica albuginea lined by a single layer of cuboidal cells called the germinal epithelium
what is folliculogenesis?
growth of the follicle (oocyte + support cells)
what is the primordial follicle?
surrounded by squamous pregranulosa cells
what is the primary follicle?
surrounded by cuboidal granulosa cells (zona granulosa)
zona pellucida forms between oocyte and granulosa cells
what is the late primary follicle?
granulosa cell form theca interna and externa which secretes oestrogen precursors
what is the secondary follicle?
antrum fills with follicular fluid
what is the Graafian follicle?
largest antral follicle
what does follicular stigma indicate?
immediate rupture of the follicle as one part of the wall thins to allow release of the oocyte.
what does the follicle transform into after ovulation?
corpus luteum
what does the corpus luteum become?
corpus albicans if no implantation
what lines the cervix?
stratified squamous epithelium that transitions to simple columnar towards the uterus
what is the breast?
gland made up of lobules
