Histology Flashcards
- Trachea
- Nasal cavity
- Bronchi
- Portions of male reproductive tract
pseudostratified ciliated columnar

portion of kidney tubules
simple cuboidal epithelium

esophagus
stratified squamous
urinary bladder
transitional

alveoli of lungs
simple squamous epithelium
lining of stomach
simple columnar
sweat gland duct
stratified cuboidal epithelium

- Stomach lining
- Intestinal lining
- Gallbladder
- Uterine tubes
- Collecting ducts of kidneys
Simple Columnar Epithelium

salivary gland duct
Stratified columnar

Location:
- capillaries
- alveoli
- glomeruli
- mesothelium
Function:
- most delicate type
- smoothly lines chambers and passageways that don’t communicate outside
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Location:
- surface of ovaries
- lining of nephrons
- walls of renal tubules
- parts of eye and thyroid
Function:
- provide limited protection
- secretions and transport (active or passive pumping)
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Location:
- where mechanical stresses are severe.
- Surface of skin
- lining of mouth
- esophagus
- anus
Function:
- protection against chemical and physical attacks
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Location:
- small intestine
- stomach and large intestine
Function:
- found where absorption and secretion occur.
- In stomach/small intestine protects from chemical stress

Simple Columnar Epithelium
Location:
- Rare.
- Along ducts of sweat glands and larger ducts of mammary glands
Function:
- protection
- secretion/absorption

Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Location:
- Rare
- Pharynx
- epiglottis
- anus
- urethra
- A few large excretory ducts
Function:
- protection
- Note: has two or multiple layers; if latter
- only superficial cells are columnar

Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Location:
- tracheal and bronchial regions of pulmonary system
- female reproductive tract
Function:
- semipermeable membrane
- cells are connected via tight junctions/desmosomes
- more selective than other types of membranes
Simple Ciliated Columnar
Location:
- nasal cavity
- trachea
- bronchi
- portions of male reproductive tract
Function:
- several cell types w/ various functions.
- Typically have cilia
Pseudo-stratified columnar
Location:
- urinary bladder
- renal pelvis
Function:
- permits expansion and recoil after stretching

Transitional Epithelium
