- Protect fingers and toes
- Made of dead cells packed with keratin
- Metabolic disorders can change structure
nail body
- visible portion of the nail, covers an area of epidermis called the nail bed
- Recessed deep to the level of surrounding epithelium

an area of thickened stratum corneum.

- an epidermal fold not visible to the surface, where nail production occurs
- deepest portion lies close to bone of fingertip

cuticle. a portion of the stratum corneum of the nail root that extends over the exposed nail.

pale area at the base of the nail with the underlying blood vessels are obscured
