Hemoglobin Flashcards
What are the two parts of hemoglobin?
Heme → iron
Globin → protein
What are the types of hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin A
Hemoglobin A2
Fetal hemoglobin
What is hemoglobin A?
The globin part is two a chains, each of which contains 141 amino acid residues and two B chains, each of which contains 146 amino aid residues
What is hemoglobin A2?
The B chains are replaced by sigma chains
What is fetal hemoglobin?
B chains are replaced by gama chains
What does reactions of hemoglobin include?
Oxyhemoglobin
Reduced hemoglobin
Methemoglobin
Carbon monoxyhemoglobein
What is methemoglobin?
When the ferrous iron is converted to ferric iron forming methemoglobin, which is dark-coloured
What causes dusky discoloration of the skin?
Methemoglobin present in large quantities in the circulation
