Anemias Flashcards
What is anemia?
A pathological condition characterized by decreased RBCs count and/or Hb content leading to decreased O2 carrying capacity of the blood and thus tissue hypoxia
What are the etiological classification of anemias?
Hemorrhagic anemia
Decreased production of RBCs
Hemolytic anemias
What is hemorrhagic anemia?
Caused by acute or chronic blood loss
What are examples of decreased production of RBCs?
Aplastic anemia
Nutritional anemias
What is aplastic anemia?
Bone marrow destruction caused by irradiation and infiltration of bone marrow with malignant cells ( leukemia)
What are nutritional anemias?
Iron deficiency anemia
Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia
Folic acid deficiency anemia
What is hemolytic anemias?
Caused by excessive hemolysis (breakdown) of the RBCs due to corpuscular causes
What is example of hemolytic anemia?
Thalassemia
What is an example of non-immune cause of hemolytic anemia?
Hypersplenism
