Heart Health details Flashcards
What is the cardiovascular system
It’s not just heart, it’s also arteries, veins and vessels.
Cells, heart and car analogy
The heart is in charge of pumping blood cells to the lungs. That’s where your blood cells load up with oxygen, kind of like you’re filling your cars tank up with gas. Then the blood cells return to the heart(after circulating throughout the body, the blood cells are depleted of oxygen). They then head back to the heart and repeat cycle
Backups in heart and attires
Sometimes backups of blood flow happen, almost like a traffic jam
Plaque(made of fat and cholesterol) can back up when you have too much cholesterol in the blood, it builds up in the arteries, which narrows them so blood flow to the heart muscle is blocked or slowed
Consequences of blood flow not flowing smoothly
Heart attack- when clot or plaque builds up in the artery and flow is blocked to the heart
Stroke- kinda happens the same way as a heart attack, but high blood pressure is more of a factor and strokes can affect your brain
High blood pressure- increases the heats workload causing it to thicken and become stiffer. You want blood pressure around 120/80
What happens when blood flow is good
It’s easier to maintain your cardio health
It carries nutrients throughout your body
It can pass through liver, and flush toxins
Arteries
Carry blood away from heart
Veins
Carry blood back to heart
Cholesterol
LDL is bad, it leads to blocks and HDL is good cholesterol. It helps remove bad cholesterol
Why stress is bad
It causes strain on the heart and increases blood pressure
