Aging Flashcards
What is cellular aging
Cells age based on the number of times they have replicated. A cell can replicate 50x before the genetic material is no longer able to be copied accurately. Plus the more damage done to cells by free radicals the more they need to replicate and thus age faster
Free Radicals?
Atoms gone wild.
Any atom can become a free radical. However, oxygen is most prone. Poor diet and pollutants egg this on the most.
When this happens, with oxygen atoms, this process damages cells by oxidizing them. Hence the term antioxidant
This causes cells to rust, much like how unprotected metal rusts.
Antioxidants ?
Healthy substances or nutrients that protect cells against damage from free radicals. Every living organism is made up of cells
Our cells must be guarded against free radicals (which can damage or mutate them) or else it leads to disease and aging
Collagen and aging
It makes up 80% of the skin and gives it its basic structure. It plumps the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and preventing them from forming
DMAE
Firms the skin
Hyaluronic acid
Allow skin to retain moisture
Jojoba oil and aloe Vera
Helps soften the skin
Vitamin a
Helps increase collagen production
Vitamin C
Promotes collagen production, which declines as we age, which leads to fine lines and wrinkles
