Heart Failure Drugs Flashcards
What is systolic heart failure?
ventricles can’t pump hard enough during systole, the blood backs up, leading to congestion
What is diastolic heart failure?
not enough blood fills into ventricles during diastole, the blood backs up, leading to congestion
What is right sided heart failure?
Will show S/S relating to the heart
Ex: fluid in tummy, pedal edema
What is left sided heart failure?
Will show S/S relating to the lungs
Ex: dyspnea, fatigue, pulmonary edema
How many stages are there in heart failure?
Stage A, B, C, D
Stage A heart failure
high risk of HF, but has no symptoms of it
Stage B heart failure
structural heart disease, but has no symptoms
Stage C heart failure
structural heart disease, with symptoms
Stage D heart failure
heart failure that requires interventions
What drug classes are used to treat heart failure
-ACE inhibitors
-ARBs
-Beta agonists
-Beta blockers
-Diuretics
-Cardiac glycosides
-phosphodiesterase inhibitors
What do positive inotropic drugs do to the heart?
increases the force of contractions within the heart
What do positive chronotropic drugs do to the heart?
increases the HR
What do positive dromotropic drugs do to the heart?
accelerate cardiac conduction
What drugs classes have positive inotropic effects?
-cardiac glycosides
-beta agonists
-phosphodiesterase inhibitors
What are the drugs names of beta agonists
-dobutamine
-hydralazine/isosorbide dinitrate
