Cholinergic Drugs Flashcards

1
Q

What are cholinergic drugs

A

drugs that stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest)
-mimics effects of acetylcholine
-binds to cholinergic receptors
-inhibits breakdown of ACh

Q

Types of cholinergic receptors

A

Q

Cholinergic drugs mechanism of action

A

-increased gastric secretions/GI motility
-increased urinary frequency
-increased salivation and sweating
-reduced intraocular pressure
-constrict pupils (miosis)

-decreased HR
-narrowed airways (bronchoconstrict)

Q

What do direct-acting cholinergic drugs do?

A

-reduce intraocular pressure
-used for glaucoma and intraocular surgery
-increase tone and motility of GI tract
-relaxes sphincter
-helpful for postsurgical atony

EX:
-cevimeline
-echothipphate

15
Q

Neostigmine, Pyridostigmine, and Physostigmine

A

-treats severe overdoses of tricyclic antidepressants
-antidote after toxic exposure to nondrug anticholinergic agents

16
Q

Pyridostigmine nursing implication

A

encourage pt w/ myasthenia gravis to take medicine 30 mins before eating to help improve chewing and swallowing

for pt w/ AD tell them the drug is for management of symptoms, and is not a cure

17
Q

what is used to reverse anticholinergic poisoning? (antidote)

A

physostigmine, and pyridostigmine

18
Q

In postoperative patients w/ decreased GI peristalsis what do we monitor for?

A

passage of flatus
