Adrenergic-Blocking Drugs Flashcards
What do adrenergic blockers do?
inhibits or blocks the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight)
-used for hypertension
-causes dilation
Alpha blockers medications
Nonselective
-phenoxybenzamine
-phentolamine
Alpha 1 Selective (ends in -osin)
-prazosin
-doxazosin
-terazosin
-alfuzosin
-tamsulosin
What are alpha blockers used for?
Raynaud’s disease (decreased blood flow to fingers b/c of decreased temp)
Phentolamine indication’s
antidote for epinephrine/norepinephrine, reverses vasoconstrictive effects
-restores blood flow and prevents tissue necrosis
-used for raynauds disease
Adverse effects of alpha blockers on cardiovascular system
orthostatic hypotension
Adverse effects of alpha blockers on CNS
dizziness
headache
anxiety
Tamsulosin (Flomax) indications
-alpha blocker used to treat BPH in males, can be used in female patients w/ kidney stones
Tamsulosin contraindications, and what do we monitor for
fall risk, monitor postural hypotension
-don’t take with erectile dysfunction medication sildenafil
Beta blockers medications (ends in -lol)
cardioselective/beta 1 blocking drugs
-atenolol
-esmolol
nonselective/blocks beta 1, 2
-carvedilol
-labetalol
What does beta 1 blocker do?
decreases the heart rate
What does beta 2 blocker do?
constrict bronchioles, narrows airways/shortness of breath
Indications for beta blockers
used in patients w/ MI
-inhibits stimulation from circulation catecholamines
-antihypertensive drugs
Indications for beta blockers
used in patients w/ MI
-inhibits stimulation from circulation catecholamines
-antihypertensive drugs
Adverse effects of beta blocker in cardiovascular system
bradycardia, heart failure
can also cause impotence/bronchospasm (constriction)
What may nonselective beta blockers interfere with?
-carvedilol
-labetalol
mask the s/s of hypoglycemia
-these two drugs should be used cautiously in pt w/ diabetes
THINK: non=non compatibile w/ diabetes, c & l are non
