What is resilience
The ability of a person to bounce back from difficulties in their life
What are emotions
Emotions are formed when our body releases chemicals in response to a specific trigger
What are feelings
When we begin to process our emotions, feelings are a longer and a mixture of different emotions
Feelings easy to express
- happy
- scared
- confused
- excited
Feelings difficult to express
- worried
- upset
- annoyed
- anger
Negatives of expressing feelings
- overwhelming
- nothing changes
- guilt
What is stress
A mental or emotional strain caused by difficult or demanding circumstances
What is eustress
Eustress is a positive stress that is short-term and can feel exciting and motivating
Examples of eustress
- getting a job
- going on a date
- meeting new people
What is distress
Distress is a negative stress that can cause anxiety and can either be short or long-term. It can also decrease performance
Examples of distress
- breakup
- study/exams
- injured/ill
- losing someone/grief
What is mindfulness
a tool that can be used to help deal with stress and is a type of meditation.
Types of mindfulness
- Observation mindfulness (what can you see, feel, hear, smell, taste)
- Listening mindfulness (listening to someone to try help you out)

Yeonmi Park - escaped from North Korea and started a new life in America with a new language, culture, and dealing with trauma
What are protective factors
a combination of individual characteristics and environmental factors that enhance our ability to be resilient

- participation in school, work and community with a sense of belonging and contributing
- a social network of peers

- little sense of control over one’s life
