What is Persuasion?
attitudes or beliefs that change as a result of exposure to messages and information about something we have an opinion about
Yale Model of Persuasive Communication Factors
Message Order or arguments Type of appraisal One vs. two sided Source Expertise Likeability Status religion Audience Persuadability Self-esteem Personality Intelligence
Yale Model of Persuasive Communication Outcome

Central Route
Peripheral Route
Central Route
through elaboration
require cognitive effort
if we do pay attention and use this route it appears to be more persistent
Peripheral Route
require very little cognitive effort
there are a lot of factor that don’t really matter
Health Promotion and Fear Appeals
Arouse fear to drive change in attitudes and behavior
Relationship between fear and likelihood of behavior change is NOT linear
Dual route models
modes of thinking that create change in attitudes/behavior differ in terms of the level of cognitive processing
Behavior Change Approach
by knowing beliefs that an individual holds, you can identify their belief sets and identify those that are needing to be changed thus creating behavior change
Self Empowermanet Approach
Health promotion activities are best designed if individuals are in control of their environment (social and internal)
How can people engage (they feel empowered through engagement)
Collective Action/Community Development Approach
More focused on interaction between individual and larger ecological niche
Focusing in on community
health of an individual is dependent on environment
create interventions at a larger scale in order to impact ones health
