Q

What type of asbestos surveys are there?

A

Management = purpose is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspected Asbestos Containing Materials - less intrusive inspection used to identify asbestos-containing materials

R&D = must take place prior to major refurbishment, remedial works or demolition of a premises. Ensuring that work on the site will be done properly without disturbing asbestos particles if present

Q

What is a dynamic risk assessment

A

The last chance to assess the risks is immediately prior to undertaking the work activity,
or indeed while in the process of actually undertaking the work and as the working
environment is changing – this is commonly called dynamic risk assessment

Q

What is wet rot and dry rot ?

A

Key points about wet rot:
Moisture requirement: Needs a high moisture content (around 50% or more) to thrive.
Spread: Primarily stays localized to the wet area, not spreading widely.
Appearance: Affected wood may appear darker, soft, spongy, and cracked.
Causes: Often caused by leaks, damp walls, or excessive moisture from plumbing issues.

Key points about dry rot:
Moisture requirement:
Can grow at lower moisture levels (around 20-30%).
Spread:
Can spread across masonry and other materials to find new sources of damp wood.
Appearance:
May have visible white fungal strands, mushroom-like fruiting bodies, (Mycelium) and a “dry rot cube” appearance.
Seriousness:
Considered more serious due to its ability to spread widely and cause significant structural damage
