Head and Neck - Blood flow Flashcards
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart, goes towards organs
Arterioles
Small branches of arteries, within organs
Capillaries
The smallest blood vessels; Nutrient, waste, and gas exchange
Venules
Collect blood from capillaries, found within organs
Veins
Return blood to the heart, comes from the organs
Aorta
Carries blood from left ventricle to systemic circulation
Pulmonary Trunk
Carries blood from right ventricle to systemic circulation
Vena Cava
Return blood to the heart from the systemic circuit
Pulmonary Veins
Return blood to the heart from the pulmonary circulation
Aorta
Carries blood from left ventricle to systemic circulation.
3 parts of the aorta: the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and the descending aorta
Tunica Intima (interna)
-Inner layer of the blood vessel
-The endothelial lining of simple squamous cells, connective tissue layer
Tunica Media (middle layer)
Contains concentric sheets of smooth muscle in loose connective tissue
Tunica Externa
Anchors vessel to adjacent tissues; contains collagen fibers and elastic fibers
Which has a thicker wall, arteries or veins?
Arteries; they have a thick wall and higher blood pressure
Which has a large, flat lumen?
Veins
