AIRBORNE IRRITANT incidents :
- unknown odors/fumes
- pepper spray, mace
- “haz mat” response shall be followed
- Full PPE and SCBA used at all times
2 ways to protect public - SHELTER IN PLACE/EVACUATION
in the case of AIRBORNE IRRITANTS, we should ?
EVACUATE– individuals will likely self evacuate
-removal to fresh air WILL HAVE POSITIVE RESULTS
HOWEVER
some instances - removing occupants through toxic atmosphere may actually cause more harm than good…SHELTER IN PLACE may be appropriate
Transmit 10-80 to alert incoming units
Controlled ventilation (mechanical or natural) of affected areas will facilitate rapid dissipation of vapor cloud
Response to UNKNOWN substances…..ex.suspicious package, envelope, powder…If NYPD is already on scene:
- make contact with NYPD IC
- transmit appropriate 10-80 code
NYPD not on scene:
- IMMEDIATELY REQUEST NYPD
- TRANSMIT 10-80 CODE
- preliminary recon
- Shut down HVAc IF NECESSARY
IF patient reports that they are CONTAMINATED ADN THEY have visible powder or other substance on their skin or clothing, member shall:
- ask patient to REMOVE outer clothing
- provide patient with disposable garment or sheet
- bag patients clothing in CLEAR PLASTIC BAG and leave with competent authority
- assess, treat, transport patient as appropriate
patients who are CRITICAL/UNSTABLE should receive EMERGENCY DECON and be treated and transported IMMEDIATELY
-notify receiving hospitals through EMD that they will be receiving a patient with possible exposure/contamination to unknown substance
Patient complains, but no IMMEDIATE EXPOSURE?
assess, treat
inform competent authority
