SYMPTOMS of Fentanyl exposure:
- pinpoint pupils
- slowed heart rate (bradycardia)
- hypoventilation (SLOW, SHALLOW BREATHING)
- respiratory arrest
- low bp
medical treatment should NEVER take place in area of suspected exposure ..
removal of patient from area and removal of product from the patient’s skin and clothing is paramount
Officer should..
REQUEST ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT
If overdose is STRONGLY SUSPECTED and patients respiratory rate is less than 10 minute, administer intra-nasal NALOXONE, via:
- MUCOSAL ATOMIZER DEVICE (MDA)
A. adult- 1 mg in each nostril (total of 2 mg)
B. pediatric -.5 mg in each nostril (total of 1 mg)
or
NARACAN /NASAL SPRAY
1. ADULT and PEDIATRIC patients : 4 mg in ONE nostril, if , after 2-3 minutes there is no or minimal response, repeat administration of 4 mg, with 2nd device in OTHER NOSTRIL
if after 5 minutes patient’s respiratory rate is NOT GREATER than 10/min, administer repeat does of naloxone, following same procedure
PERSONAL DECONTAMINATION..
- areas of direct skin contact with any residue suspected of containing synthetic opioids should be IMMEDIATELY WASHED WITH COPIOUS amounts of water, then asap wash skin with soap and water
- avoid alcohol based hand disinfections or hypochlorite bleach solutions
- shower immediately
decon PPE..
LIGHTLY WET (sprayed just enough to wet the gear and not DRIP ), then bagged for proper decon
all clothing and work duty uniform …

–decon items bagged using a double sealed clear plastic bag with label attached
