Haz Mat 19/Lithium Ion Energy Storage System Flashcards
Lithium Ion Energy Storage System..
-store energy to supply electrical energy at a future time
ESTOP-shut down entire system
DON’T EVER SHUT DOWN SYSTEM without consultation..
UPS (uninterruptible power supply)–battery back up providing power for financial centers, shut not be shut down without consultation of building engineer
Stored/Stranded energy..
even after batteries are severely burned, they may still retain high voltage electrical charge (stranded energy)
No spill hazard with these type of batteries..
flammable electrolyte –potentialy explosive atmosphere
Re-ignition
even after final extinguishment , Li-ion-ESS may re-ginite hours to days
-may not be seen by Thermal imaging camera
Procedures are for OUTDOOR/ROOFTOP installation …
NO FIRE/NO SMOKE SHOWING
- determine if ESS battery type is Li-ion
- establish initial danger zone
- all FDNY personnel behind physical barriers (fence)
- minimum 50 feet radius from containers/cabinets
- minimum 100 feet radius from exhaust fan opening (usually located on side opposite FDC) cabinets may not have exhaust system
- ENGINE COMPANIES secure water source, STRETCH precautionary handling , and STRETCH supply lines to supply FDC, if available (does not say charge FDC)
- TRANSMIT 10-80 CODE 1
CONFIRMED FIRE/SMOKE SHOWING on arrival…
-determine if ESS battery is LI-ION-ESS (usually signange at FDC, if available )
-initial danger zone
-50 feet radius from container/cabinet
-100 ft radius from Exhaust opening (opposite FDC)
-SHUT DOWN ESS (ESTOP) at FDC or inside electrical room if ESS IS SUPPLYING a building
-ENGINE connect to FDC and CHARGE (signage for pressures and flow rates at the FDC)
-EXHAUSt OVERRIDE SWITCH (exhaust system)
-use exterior lines to cool adjacent cabinets and exposures if present and necessary /use narrow fog or straight stream application and maximum reach of streams
TRANSMIT 10-80 CODE 1
NOTE; IF FDC is located CLOSER than 50 feet from the nearest container , than only enter this area under the order of the IC
POST FIRE …
- may open container/cabinet doors after consultation with SME and the fire is extinguished
- FDNY PERSONNEL NEVER ENTER CONTAINER
- NO OVERHAULING ON ANY ESS
- IC shall transfer responsibility to subject matter expert for decommissioning /fire watch.
