In the event of a radiological incident inovlving the release or use of radioactive iodine, the use of KI (POTASSIUM IODINE) may be necessary precaution.
KI will saturate the thyroid gland with iodine and help prevent the absorption of radioactive iodine
note: using KI WILL ONLY PROTECT THYROID GLAND from radioactive iodine
Adult dose recommended for FDNY members following an exposure to radioactive iodine is 130 milligrams , ONE TABLET POTASSIUM IODINE (KI) AS SOON AS AFTER EXPOSURE AS POSSIBLE
taking a higher does will NOT offer more protection and can have sever health effects
People should not take KI , IF…
- Have every had THYROID DISEASE
- know they are allergic to iodine (if allergic to shellfish, ask your doctor )
- have certain skin disorders, dermatitis ,herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis
Engine/Ladders will carry 130 mg POTASSIUM IODINE (KI) TABLETS IN THE GLOVEBOX OF APPARATUS
-if tablets needed go to nearest DIVISION OFFICE
- additional tablets at division offices
- can be stored for 5 years without losing potency, refrigeration not required
- ONLY TAKE KI WHEN DIRECTED BY
CHIEF OF DEPARTMENT
-FDOC WILL MAKE NOTIFICATIONS to members in specific areas (1 TABLET )
