hand therapy Flashcards
painful condition affecting tendons on the thumb side of the wrist
*Sticking or stop-and-go sensation of the hand
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
- Pain and swelling near base of thumb
* Difficulty moving thumb and wrist that involves grasping or pinching
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
Caused by repetitive hand or wrist movements
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
In Boutonniere Deformity what is happening with fingers joints and what caused it?
Deformed positon of the hands
PIP is flexed toward palm, DIP is hyperextedned due to rupture of central slip tendon
Treatment for Boutonniere Deformity
Splint PIP in extension but allow MP and DIP flexion
ROM exercises
Surgical repair of tendon and other interventions
Tendons in wrist and thumb (abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis) glide through sheath and connect to the base of the thumb
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
Cause of Boutounneire Deformity?
Injury (blow to the finger)
RA
Genetic
The sheath around the two tendons thickens and swells and restricts movement through tunnel
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
Tests for Boutounneire Deformity
x-ray and Elson’s Test
Having this condition will hurt when turning wrist, or grasping and making a fist?
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
What test is for DeQuervain’s?
Finkelstein test
Bend thumb across palm of your hand and bend fingers down
- Abnormal thickening of the fascia tissue in the palm that can extend to the fingers
- Firm pits, nodules and chords that pull the fingers into flexion at the MP joints
- Usually not painful
Dupuytren’s Contracture
Treatment for DeQuervain’s
splinting!
Causes of Duputren’s Contacture
Not known
More common in men over 40 and from northern European descent
Test for this is Palpitation
