Antipsychotic, 5mg/mL
Haloperidol - Pharmacology
Haloperidol possesses a strong activity against delusions and hallucinations, most likely due to an effective dopaminergic receptor blockage in the mesocortex and the limbic system of the brain
Haloperidol - Metabolism
By the liver with excretion in the urine, bile and faeces
Haloperidol - Onset, Duration, Half-life
Onset - 5 mins (peak 20 mins)
Duration - 2-3 hours
Half-life - 20 hours
Haloperidol - Indications
Acute psychosis (requiring pre-hospital intervention)
Haloperidol - Contraindications
- KSAR or hypersensitivity to Haloperidol
- Parkinson’s disease
Haloperidol - Precautions
- Patients who have taken alcohol or other drugs may develop severe hypotension
- ALOC
- Elderly debilitated patients
- History of dystonic reactions
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrom
- Tardive Dyskinesia
Haloperidol - Side Effects
- Anxiety
- Euphoria
- Extrapyramidal reaction
- Hypotension
- Lethargy and drowsiness
- Respiratory depression
Haloperidol - Routes of Administration
IM
Haloperidol - Acute Psychosis Adult Doses
Greater than 50 - 5mg once
Less than 50 - 10mg once
