Ceftriaxone - Pharmacology
Ceftriaxone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a baterialcidal action
Ceftriaxone - Metabolism
Excreted as a variety of active and inactive metabolites from the body through urine, bile and faeces
Ceftriaxone - Indications
Suspected meningococcal septicaemia (with a non-blanching petechial AND/OR purpuric rash
Ceftriaxone - Contraindications
- KSAR or hypersensitivity to cephalosporin drugs
- Known anaphylaxis or severe allergy to penicillin based drugs
Ceftriaxone - Precautions
- Nil
Ceftriaxone - Side effects
- Nausea AND/OR vomiting
- Pain at the site of IM injection
Ceftriaxone - Onset, Duration, Half-life
Onset - Variable
Duration - 1 day
Half-life - 5.8-8.7 hrs

- IM
- IV
- IO
Ceftriaxone - Adult doses
IM - 1g (mix with 3.6mL water for injection)
IV - 1 g (mix with 9.6mL water for injection)
Ceftriaxone - Paed doses
50mg/kg rounded to the nearest 5kg
