Aspirin - Class & Presentation
Antiplatelet, 300mg tablet
Aspirin - Pharmacology
Aspirin inhibits platelet aggregation by irreversibly inhibiting COX, reducing the synthesis of Thromboxane A2 for the life of the platelet. This action forms the basis of preventing platelets from aggregating to exposed collagen fibres at the site of vascular injury.
Aspirin - Metabolism
Converted to salicylic acid in many tissues, but primarily in the GI mucosa and liver. Subsequently excreted by the kidneys
Aspirin - Indications
- Suspected ACS
- Acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema
Aspirin - Contraindications
- KSAR to aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Chest pain associated with psychostimulant OD
- Bleeding or clotting disorders
- Current GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
- Patients
Aspirin - Precautions
- Possible aortic aneurysm or other condition that may require surgery
- Pregnancy
- History of GI bleeding of peptic ulcers
- Concurrent anticoagulant therapy
Aspirin - Side Effects
- Epigastric pain/discomfort
- Nausea and/or Vomiting
- Gastritis
- GI bleeding
- NSAID induced bronchospasm
Aspirin - Onset, Duration & Half-life
Onset - approx 10 min
Duration - approx 1 week
Half-life - 3.2 hrs

- PO
Aspirin - Doses
- 300mg, followed by a small sip of water
