Unknown- thought to be immunologic
Alopecia areata- Sx
Well demarcated patches with normal skin below. Exclamation hairs- 2-3mm in length
Alopecia areata- Tx
Triamcinalone injections or systemic corticosteroids. Remits when meds stopped
Alopecia Totalis
Extension of alopecia areata to entire scalp
Androgenic Alopecia- Eti
Pattern baldness. Predertermined by genetics
Androgenic Alopecia- Dx
Serum testosterone, iron and thyroid test to determine underlying cause
Androgenic Alopecia- Tx
Topical minoxidil or finasteride
Telogen effluvium- Eti
Increase in number of hairs in telogen phase due to shock, diet, pregnancy, or homonal
Telogen effluvium- Sx
Presence of large number of hairs with white bulbs upon tugging- excess of 150 per day
Telogen effluvium- Dx
Hair pull- white bulbs, serum iron to determine if caused by iron deficiency
Telogen effluvium- Tx
None- complete regrowth should occur
Psuedofolliculitis Barbae- Eti
Irritation of hair follcile caused by razor
Psuedofolliculitis Barbae-Sx
follicular papular bumbs in shaved area. If pustules than secondary infection
Psuedofolliculitis Barbae- Tx
Discontinue shaving, use clippers
