haematological cancers Flashcards
what are the types of haem cancers?
leukaemia -> ALL, AML, CLL, CML
lymphomas -> Hodgkin’s, non-Hodgkin
myeloma -> multiple myeloma
which types of haem cancers are monoclonal?
leukaemia
what does monoclonal mean?
forming a clone derived from an individual cell
ALL CELLS LOOK THE SAME
what is acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)?
proliferation with blocked differentiation/maturation
what will be seen on blood film?
large cells with high nucleus to cytoplasm ratio
large number of primitive myeloids + neutropenia, RBC penia, thrombocytopenia
what is a buzz word blood finding in a question for AML?
auer rods
what is acute lymphoblastic leukaemia?
proliferation with blocked differentiation/maturation
what will be seen on blood film of someone with ALL?
lots of lymphoid progenitors -> no B-cells or T-cells
how can ALL stop myeloid differentiation?
release of chemicals
lack of space in marrow
who is ALL most commonly seen in?
children
what will be seen under a microscope in ALL?
blast cells - 4/5 red cells fit in a blast for size
what is chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)?
proliferation with preserved maturation
what will be seen on blood film in someone with CML?
lots of neutrophils, RBCs, platelets (thrombocytosis)
what will be seen under s microscope in someone with CML?
segmented nucleus = maturation preserved
what will be seen on blood film of someone with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia?
small mature B lymphocytes
