H8 - Respiratory Histology Flashcards
what is the full name of respiratory epithelium?
non keratinised pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells
What is lamina propia?
a band of connective tissue containing sub mucous glands and rich venous plexus
what lines the roof of the nasal cavity ?
specialised olfactory epithelium
what lines the initial part of the nasal cavity ?
keratinised stratified, squamous epithelium
what lines the oropharynx?
non-keratinised stratified epithelium
what lines the larynx?
walls are made of cartilage and muscles with respiratory epithelium
vocal folds and adjacent structures are covered with stratified squamous epithelium
what lines the tracheas?
15 - 20 rings of C shaped cartilage
respiratory epithelium backed by basal lamina, lamina propia of connective tissue with abundant elastic fibres and a submucosa of loose connective tissue with numerous seromucosa glands
what lines the bronchi?
- irregularly shaped cartilage
- respiratory epithelium, lamina propia, smooth muscle ring, seromucosa with adipose tissue and glands
- decreases in height from columnar to cuboidal
what lines the bronchioles?
- smooth muscles which respond to parasympathetic innervation & histamine
- ends at a cuboidal ciliated epithelium and have ciliated club cells
what are club cells?
- stem cells
- detoxification
- immune modulation
- surfactant production
what are the characteristics of type 1 alveoli epithelium?
simple squamous epithelium that lines alveolar surface
What are the characteristics of type 2 alveoli epithelium?
polygonal shape, free surface covered by microvilli and has a dense membrane bound lamellar bodies containing surfactant
