H2 -Covering epithelia Flashcards
What is the basil lamina?
sheet like projection of extracellular matrix on the basal surface
What are the functions of epithelia?
line surface - lining of the gall bladder
make organs - livers
What are the embryonic origins if epithelium?
ectoderm
mesoderm
endoderm
What are the functions of the epithelium?
mechanical barrier chemical barrier absorption secretion containment locomotion sensation and contractility
What are the main components of the cytoskeleton?
actin filaments
intermediate filaments
microtubules
what is the endoderm?
germ layer gives rise to the epithelia of the gut, respiratory tract, liver and epithelial glands associated with the gut
what do actin filaments do?
- Anchorage,
- movement and extension of cell membrane
what do intermediate filaments do?
form a network in the cell and are important in structural function
what do microtubules to?
mportant in cell movement and division
what are microtubules composed of?
alpha and beta tubulin subunits
what is the ectoderm
germ layer that gives rise to the epithelia of the skin and its associated glands, and the oral, nasal and anal passages.
what is the mesoderm?
germ layer that gives rise to the epithelial linings of the cardiovascular system and the mesothelium lining the peritoneal, pleural and pericardial cavities.
what are the common features of epithelia? (4)
- all have basal lamina
- all non-vascular
- usually polarised
- bind together in sheets
what do occluding junctions (tight junctions) do?
link cells to form a diffusion barrier
what do anchoring junctions do?
provide mechanical strength
what do adherent junctions do?
Link submembrane actin bundles of adjacent cells.
what do desmosomes do?
Link submembrane intermediate filaments of adjacent cells
what do communicating junctions do?
allow movement of molecules between cells.
what is a junctional complex?
lose association of several types of junctions found in certain epithelial tissues
what do gap junctions allow?
elective diffusion of molecules between adjacent
cells.
what proteins produce pores in communicating junctions?
connexon
what are the 4 classifications of covering epithelia?
- cell shape
- number of cell layers
- cell surface or tissue surface specialisations
- presence of specialised cell types
what is the flattened cell shape classification?
squamous
what is the cube shaped classification?
cuboidal
